Amish Influence in Windsor Missouri
A key part of what makes Windsor Missouri a special place to live is the Amish influence. Farming is a way of life for many in the Windsor area. Some farm their land with modern conveniences while others do not use such conveniences. Still, there is a common bond between all farmers, and pride of place is important.
Throughout the city of Windsor Missouri you see old homes restored to their previous glory, with few new homes or sprawling subdivisions to take away from the joys of a small town. Windsor has a population of approximately 3000. My wife and I decided to restore a turn-of-the-century home on Washington Street. With great joy and pride we watch the Amish go by in their horse drawn carriages, completing the restoration in a way that would not be possible anywhere but in Windsor. We can look out a bay window, or sit on the wrap-around porch as the Amish pass by, taken back in time to when our house was new, back to a simpler time, although long before we were born. For that we shall forever be grateful.
The Amish are a great asset to Windsor and the Amish community is growing. The religious community is about three miles east of Windsor, while the Amish grocery store is located off of Highway 2. The grocery store, Kuntry Bulk Grocery, is open to the general public.
On WW north of Windsor, past Windsor High School, you will find an Amish manufacturer of sheds, etc., and a bulk produce auction house. On Highway 2 you will find Amish made windows and seamless guttering. We used their services during our restoration and they did a wonderful job. You should expect to provide transportation for the Amish under some circumstances, but it is not uncommon for them to bring a team of draft horses and wagons to accomplish some heavy work.
In 1984 there were 12 Old Order Amish settlements in Missouri. According to records the settlement in Windsor was founded in 1975 and has one congregation.
